Dr Mark Papworth is a consultant clinical psychologist working in the Northeast of England. Typically clients from areas such as Newcastle (including Gosforth, Jesmond and Heaton), Northumberland, Gateshead and Durham travel to see him at his clinics. Remote appointments (for example, via Skype) are also offered.

 

He qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1991 and has been working in the NHS for the majority of the time since that point. Since 1999 he has worked as a consultant clinical psychologist which, as well as treating patients, involved leading and supervising teams of mental health professionals. Throughout his career, he has worked primarily treating adults in community and primary care (GP Practice) settings. He has also worked with children and families. His therapeutic approach is eclectic, which means that he can draw upon training in approaches such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy and cognitive analytic therapy to meet your needs.

His degrees are a Doctorate and MSc in clinical psychology, as well as BSc in psychology. He also has an MA in Leadership (Leading Innovation and Change) and a BA in fine art.

Mark worked for some thirteen years at Newcastle University as programme director for the post-graduate certificate in low intensity psychological therapies. This is a new form of CBT that is used to treat mild to moderate, common mental health problems over a shorter length of contact. He also taught on the University's Doctorate in Clinical Psychology for some fifteen years. In doing so, he has been involved in the training of many of the psychological wellbeing practitioners and clinical psychologists located in the Northeast of England. He now offers psychotherapy in private practice.

Mark has published widely, his research papers are primarily related to his clinical work in the NHS. He is the lead author of a textbook about practising psychological therapy and has been an associate editor for a scientific journal that focuses on the topic of CBT. He is currently the editor of a series of self-help books that are based on CBT. He has written self-help books in the series (about overcoming anxiety and also depression).
